Alan Rutt, Director

Welcome to the British Council Bahrain website. We want you to find everything you need here about our programmes in Education, Society and Arts as well as information about improving your English skills, studying in the UK and taking UK qualifications.

I joined the British Council Bahrain team in December 2015. I am proud to work for an organisation who’s  involvement in Bahrain dates back to 1948 when W R Keight, the Council’s representative in Basra, visited the island and met Sheikh Salman Bin Isa, the ruler of Bahrain who asked about Keight’s work in Basra and rated culture only second to health among the priorities of his government. The first activities were a visit by a number of Bahraini teachers to Nottingham University and a short English course held in 1950. The first fully dedicated British Council office in in Bahrain was finally opened in 1959.

Today we are proud to continue that tradition of cultural and educational relations with the people of Bahrain.  A great many Bahrainis have learned English in our centre, some have undertaken courses of study in the UK and others have taken part in the arts and training events that we have organised. 2016 marks the 200th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom, an occasion that will be marked by a yearlong programme of events concerts, cultural and educational programmes to celebrate the best of the British Bahraini relationship.

Our mission is to develop strong and vibrant relationships that provide opportunities for people in both countries, and to work with many more people in Bahrain and the UK in support of our shared aspiration for a stable and prosperous future. Our commitment to inclusivity and diversity is reflected across our programmes and we know this is appreciated by our contacts and partners, which we hope include you!

I encourage you to follow the British Council on our Facebook and Instagram pages and to give us your feedback on how we can make things even better. I hope you will continue to stay in touch with us for many years to come.
